Joseph Gales (1761-1841) was editor of the Raleigh Register and owner of a Raleigh, NC, bookstore (Dictionary of North Carolina Biography 2:265-67). The Raleigh Register was staunchly Republican and often critical of the actions of University faculty and trustees.
